Morning Whale Watch

Posted by EM@KING.NET

During this two-hour whale watch, the Teralani searches for the Pacific humpback whale. Each winter, the Pacific humpback whale migrates from Alaska to the waters off the coast of Maui. These "gentle giants" are one of Maui's most prized visitors with their spectacular breaching and tail slapping. Throughout whale season (December 15 - April 15), the Teralani departs each day from Kaanapali for a daily excursion. A marine naturalist is onboard to offer insights and education on the humpback whale. ...

Whaddya know that iPhone is an excellent Network Admin Tools?

Posted by EM @ KING.NET On 7/04/2009 10:32:00 PM 0 comments
My primary use of iPhone is to read my company emails, personal email address and other emails through Exchange Server 2003/2007 active sync and IMAP (here's my previous post, setting up email in iPhone). The games, music, surfing NET, etc. are just add-on for this cool gadget mobile phone.

Whaddya know that iPhone 3G S is an excellent Network Admin Tools (geeks Swiss Army Tool)? . I can't go out without iPhone dealing with my business. I read and respond to all customers inquiry wherever I am and ofcourse I can make the necessary network administration tasks while I'm out of the office.

I will introduce you two remote management tools to manage your Windows and Linux Server. I personally and highly recommend that you buy these tools.

For Windows Server Remote Desktop tool, I am currently using WinAdmin released by Carter Harrison LLC. Using this tool, I can easily connect to my windows servers and perform the necessary server administrations. As of this date, it is currently on sale for only $7.99 to download.

Well if you're managing Linux servers. I recommend TouchTerm SSH released by Aji LLC. I am using this tool to manage my dedicated linux servers. Very easy to use SSH tool to connect to your linux server. The best of all it will only cost you $0.99 to download.

I know there are some advance tools available in Apple Apps Store, there are so many of them and I can't test them all. If you are using different Network Admin tools and would like to share with us, please don't hesitate to post your comments or send me email so I can post it here.

Enjoy reading.

UPDATE: I email the support @iphonewinadmin.com regarding WinAdmin security encryption, because of admin privileges concern. Here's the answer direct from Carter.

"Hi Emil,

Thanks for your email. WinAdmin uses 128 bit encryption on the RDP layer. This is also known as 'high security' in windows Server 2003 or 2008. This is a standard encryption protocol for RDP and is currently the highest level of encryption available for an iPhone RDP client. I appreciate your article on WinAdmin and if you have any other questions, I'm here to help.

Thanks and Best Regards,
Carter

How climate change will affect you?

Everyone is affected by climate change, here's a good one I captured from Bizarro blog.

I think everybody needs to be part of the solution. We can't rely to our government or Al Gore's climate project to fix this for us.

"There has never been a better time than now for making the change we need in dealing with the climate crisis -- across the world, as we look toward the Copenhagen Climate Conference in December this year.

Worldwide, we all need to urge our governmental leaders to pass strong climate change legislation before that time. This is truly a new era of hope and opportunity for our cause. " (2009, theclimateproject.org)

KING of POP Michael Jackson is dead at 50

As you know by now, The KING of POP Michael Jackson is dead. I'm in 80's music and I enjoyed all his records in the early 80's, learned to dance because of Triller and Beat it. He changed the music television at that time and open the world of opportunity to all aspiring artist.

"Jackson, under apparent cardiac arrest, was taken from his home by paramedics to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where a team of physicians tried to resuscitate him for more than an hour, said Jackson's brother Jermaine. He said the music idol was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. (5:26 p.m. ET)." (2009, CNN.com)

RIAA won it's case for $1.9 total fines.

Posted by EM @ KING.NET On 6/21/2009 12:21:00 AM 0 comments
Good morning. Everyday you read an interesting news and today is just another day. You can be fine of $80,000 of copyright violation per song. This is interesting story to share to everyone. Please continue to read.

"The Recording Industry Association of America won its case—to the tune of $1.92 million—gainst a Minnesota woman for allegedly downloading 24 songs. The RIAA has continued an aggressive campaign against digital piracy, as propagated through P2P networks, although this case represents the first one successfully brought to trial.

One music fan out there could be paying $80,000 for a Green Day track—whether he or she likes it or not.

The Recording Industry Association of America won a major victory June 18 in Minnesota federal court, which ruled that Jammie Thomas-Rasset was guilty of copyright violation for downloading 24 songs using the Kazaa file-sharing network.

The court fined Thomas-Rasset $1.92 million, which translates into $80,000 per song. It represents the first time a filing-sharing case has successfully gone to trial. The downloaded artists in question included Green Day and Sheryl Crow." (2009, eweek.com).

Firewall Configuration

Posted by EM @ KING.NET On 6/19/2009 12:14:00 AM 0 comments
It's been a while since I configure a firewall for a new office setup. So here's just a review for myself as well.

The setup of firewall is still the same process for last couple of years, maybe for the last 5-10 years. The only different in my humble opinion is they improve the GUI management interface instead of using the telnet program through the console. You configure the internal IP address e.g 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 for your firewall, external IP address for the external interface
and set the routing in the firewall. Where the route should point to your router IP address, not the external IP of the firewall. This is a common mistake when setting up a new firewall.

For route example: IP address 0.0.0.0 point to router IP 1.2.3.4 as your gateway.

Create a test policy:
Source: ANY
Destination: ANY
Service: ANY

Please Note: You should create a GROUP for your service to manage allowed ports to get out of your network. Same approach for incoming traffic, you create a GROUP and add the ports you allow to get in to your network.

You can also use your firewall as DHCP Server. I recommend this to entrepreneurs and small business for them to save money for the time being.

.CM Sunrise Period Opens at EuroDNS

Posted by EM @ KING.NET On 6/15/2009 12:04:00 AM 0 comments
EuroDNS announced sunrise period for .CM today. The .CM is the country code top level domain (ccTLD) for the Republic of Cameroon. It is another domain name extension to use for your personal or business. Instead of having .com .net .org or .etc, you can also register randompage.cm domain name if you own the trademark rights for "randompage" starting June 15 'till July 14.

According to PR website "During the Sunrise phase, the minimum registration period is 2 years and applicants must hold a valid and issued trademark at the time of application. If there is more than one valid Sunrise application for the same domain name, the name will be awarded to the registrant with the oldest registered trademark. Each domain application costs 360 EUR with a non-refundable fee of 60 EUR, including a two years term." (2009, prweb.com)

On July 15th-31th Landrush period, all domain name applications will be subjected to a premium fee (260 EUR including 2 years term) and an auction system.

The live registration is on August 1st, 2009 where everyone can register a .CM domain name on a first come first serve basis. The minimum registration is 1 year and the price differ from registrar.

One of the sell pitch is "People often forget to type the "o" when looking for .com domain name, and having your domain name in .cm could secure a lot of traffic". (2009, prweb.com). This is the similar approach for selling .CO the country code top level domain (ccTLD) for Colombia. That's a good one but the business minded people forget to include the changes of technology. For example, some business network are now using openDNS network for web filtering security, where if you type www.randompage.co or www.randompage.cm the system will automatically redirect to www.randompage.com website. So my assumption, even you own .co or .cm domain name, the openDNS will consider this a typo of .com website. Making this extension useless for you.

I will not be surprise if Internet Service Provider is going to use OpenDNS web filtering tools as this service is free to use for personal or business. They can stop the fraud website on the DNS level before this going to the customer web page. And if you are not using this tool (OpenDNS), visit the website today and protect your network.

How to add new module positions on Joomla 1.5

Posted by EM @ KING.NET On 6/09/2009 12:30:00 AM 0 comments
In Joomla 1.x releases, you can add a new module positions through the Template Manager, then add module position.

That's a different approach for Joomla 1.5.x. You have to  add the module position using the templateDetails.xml file. Here's an example.

<>
<>header< /position >
<>hornav< /position >
<>banner< /position >
<>left< /position >
<>right< /position >
<>top< /position >
<>king-position< /position >   see this in action below.
<>ja-login< /position >
<>user1< /position >
<>user2< /position >
< /positions >

Please note, there is no space between <> tag.

This is a sample Joomla 1.5x script code:
< ?php if ($this->countModules('king-position')) : ? >
    <><>include type="modules" name="king-position" style="xhtml" / >< /div >
< ?php endif; ? >
I hope this help, check out www.cmswebsite.com website.
